Smallmouth & Largemouth Turned On!
The smallmouth and largemouth bass bite is really turned on at Lake Mohave. Not only are some still bedded but many are spawned out and actively hunting.
I landed this pretty largemouth off the new fishing dock at Katherine Landing using my favorite jig combo; dressed football jig with a YUM craw bug. Also pictured are Savagegear Goby Tubes, which I personally feel will be just as productive as the craw baits.
Fishing football jigs with plastic creature baits can be frustrating but yet extremely rewarding. Due to the fact that there’s a single hook, once you set the hook you must keep your line tight and hook pinned so you don’t lose the fish. Bass in general and smallmouth in particular are known for throwing the hook if they get any slack in the line.
Will Romesburg of Bullhead City recently caught a few nice smallmouth bass on the Nevada side of Telephone cove using a 4 inch Roboworm plastic worm on a dropshot set up.
The striper bite is still very slow, I’m guessing due to the abundance of shad, they are nice and full. If you’d like to target striper I’d suggest going out towards the dam and using frozen bait such as anchovies or sardines. People have been reporting catching a few out there using that method.
